the story
It was the tail end of COVID, and my partner and I had a Friday night ritual. Just the two of us, music playing, dancing in the kitchen, celebrating the end of another week.
One evening, in the middle of our little dance party, I could tell something was on his mind. A difficult subject came up, and suddenly the mood began to shift.
I didn’t have a plan. I just knew I didn’t want the conversation to become an argument or for either of us to feel unheard.
So I said something simple.
“Let’s get on the rug.”
I told him that whenever we stood on that rug together, it would be our safe space. A place where we could talk about anything without judgment or defensiveness. Where we could be vulnerable, speak honestly, and know the other person was there to listen, not just respond.
And it didn’t have to be that particular rug. Wherever we were, whenever we needed it, we could find our way back to that space.
Just the two of us, choosing each other.
Something shifted that night. What could have become a difficult evening turned into a moment of understanding. From then on, the rug became more than a place on the floor. It became a way for us to communicate.
That experience stayed with me.
I started thinking about how many conversations go unheard, not because people don’t care, but because they don’t know how to begin.
What if everyone had a rug?
Not necessarily a physical one, but a shared space where we could put down our defenses, speak honestly, and feel heard. A place where difficult conversations could feel a little less difficult, and where understanding mattered more than being right.
That’s how get on the rug™ was born.
A simple invitation to come together, speak honestly, listen with compassion, and remember that even when we disagree, we’re still on the same rug.
two people, one rug, one turn at a time.
